Chennai, May 11 — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay met his predecessor and DMK president M.K. Stalin at Stalin’s Alwarpet residence on Monday, a politically significant visit that followed the state’s dramatic post-election realignment. The meeting came after Vijay attended the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MLAs in the Assembly.
Vijay, who led the TVK in its electoral debut, emerged as a central figure after the party won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, becoming the single largest party but falling short of the 118 seats needed to form a government on its own. Facing this shortfall, Vijay opened talks with parties that had been part of the DMK-led alliance to secure outside support.
Following negotiations, the Congress agreed to extend support to the TVK and formally distanced itself from the DMK-led coalition. The Left parties — the CPI and the CPI-M — along with the VCK and the IUML, also announced unconditional outside support for the Vijay-led formation, enabling the TVK to cross the majority threshold in the Assembly.
With this backing, Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10 at a ceremony in Chennai. Soon after assuming office, he signed files for three major welfare initiatives: free electricity benefits for households, strengthened women’s safety measures, and enhanced anti-drug enforcement across districts. He also convened meetings with senior officials to discuss law and order and the new government’s administrative priorities.
Vijay paid tribute at the memorial of social reformer Periyar, whom he has cited as an ideological inspiration, and met Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani, receiving his greetings. Political activity in the Assembly intensified on Monday with the first session of the newly constituted House; TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar filed his nomination for the post of Speaker ahead of the election.
