At first glance, these upgrades seem impressive, with brands promoting them as significant enhancements to user experience. However, the real question remains: do these figures translate into noticeable day-to-day differences for users?

The answer isn’t as clear-cut as one might think. While a higher refresh rate does suggest technical improvements, the actual differences between 120Hz and 144Hz or 165Hz are often imperceptible for the average user. Refresh rate, the number of times a display updates per second, ranges from 60Hz to 165Hz. In simpler terms, think of a flip-book animation: the quicker the pages turn, the smoother the motion. While the jump from 60Hz to 120Hz is distinctly noticeable, the enhancements beyond 120Hz become less impactful.

On paper, it appears that a 144Hz or 165Hz display should provide a smoother experience compared to a 120Hz display. However, in practice, this difference is minimal for most consumers. A key factor contributing to this limitation is that the system interface on many devices is capped at 120Hz, and most applications are not designed to utilize refresh rates beyond that threshold. Consequently, even if a smartphone claims support for a 165Hz display, it typically operates at 120Hz or lower in everyday scenarios, with the higher refresh rate activated only during specific activities.

Gaming represents a potential area where these elevated refresh rates could have more significant implications. Nonetheless, even in this domain, limitations exist. A significant number of mobile games run at 60fps or 90fps, with only a select few reaching 120fps or higher. As a result, higher refresh rate panels often fail to operate at their peak performance.

Additionally, users should be aware of the trade-off associated with higher refresh rates: increased battery consumption. Operating a display at 144Hz or 165Hz demands more energy than its 120Hz counterpart. To mitigate this issue, manufacturers often implement adaptive refresh rate systems that adjust the display’s refresh rate according to user activity. For instance, when watching videos or reading text, the refresh rate may automatically drop to 60Hz to conserve battery life. Although brands market this feature, emphasizing the benefits of smoother performance alongside the higher energy consumption, users should consider how this affects daily use.

In competitive gaming, higher refresh rates can significantly improve motion clarity and responsiveness. Yet, for routine tasks like social media browsing, messaging, and typical web navigation, a well-optimized 120Hz display already delivers a smooth experience. Furthermore, video content typically produced at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps offers no inherent benefits from higher refresh rates, suggesting that factors such as brightness and color accuracy hold more weight in enhancing user experience.

Ultimately, for most consumers, a well-optimized 120Hz display is adequate, providing a responsive and enjoyable experience across common use cases. Rather than fixating solely on higher refresh rate numbers, users are encouraged to assess overall display quality, consistency, and brightness. Presently, 144Hz and 165Hz displays serve more as a marketing tool than a substantial upgrade for daily use, adding nominal value on paper while likely failing to influence purchasing decisions for the majority.
