Assam Alert: Heavy Rain Halts Life in Baghjan, Tinsukia Waterlogged
Torrential rain battered Baghjan and neighbouring areas in Tinsukia district on Tuesday evening, April 28, causing widespread waterlogging, disrupting daily life and bringing traffic to a near standstill on key routes. The downpour began in the late afternoon and intensified by evening, inundating low-lying neighbourhoods and forcing early closure of the busy Tiniaali market.
Residents of Baghjan, Dighaltarang and surrounding localities described streets turning into fast-flowing channels, making movement difficult for pedestrians and vehicles. Two-wheelers and autorickshaws were especially affected; some vehicles stalled in deep water while others were forced onto longer detours.
At Tiniaali market — a local hub for vegetables, fish and household goods — vendors wound up operations as water levels rose rapidly. Traders reported losses after perishable stock was damaged by the flooding.
Road stretches connecting Baghjan with Tinsukia town and other parts of Upper Assam experienced severe congestion, with commuters facing long delays and safety concerns. Emergency services were not reported to have recorded any casualties.
Flooding and soil erosion are recurring problems in the area, and similar waterlogging incidents have been reported in parts of Tinsukia town in recent weeks, heightening worries about preparedness ahead of the monsoon. The India Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall across Upper Assam in the coming days.
Local residents urged authorities to clear clogged drains and improve drainage infrastructure to prevent repeated disruption, calling for swift action before heavier monsoon rains arrive.
