Pakistan’s Airspace Ban on Indian Airlines Extended Until May 24: A Powerful Reminder Ahead of Pahalgam Terror Attack Anniversary
Pakistan has officially extended its ban on Indian aircraft using its airspace for another month, further solidifying restrictions initially implemented nearly a year ago. The ban, which began on April 24, 2025, is now set to remain in effect until May 24, 2025, significantly impacting Indian airlines and their international flight routes.
A recent Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) confirms that all aircraft registered in India-as well as those operated, owned, or leased by Indian airlines, including military flights-will be barred from Pakistani airspace until 5 AM on May 24, 2026. This notice was issued just days before the previous ban was set to expire, ensuring the continuation of restrictions.
The latest ban will be enforced from April 21 until 11:59 PM UTC on May 23, which corresponds to 5:30 AM IST on May 24. In addition, it follows India’s earlier decision to deny Pakistani airlines access to its own airspace until 5:30 AM on April 24, a measure that is also expected to be prolonged.
The airspace closures between the two nations derive from a series of escalating tensions. Notably, the shutout of Pakistan’s airspace occurred shortly after a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 last year that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. Following this incident, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty on April 23, further straining relations. These closures echo historical precedents set during the 1999 Kargil conflict and the 2019 Pulwama crisis.
In a report from August, the Pakistani publication Dawn revealed that the airspace ban has had significant economic repercussions for Pakistan. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) reportedly experienced a loss of over ₹1,240 crores within the first two months of the ban. The Ministry of Defence highlighted in discussions within the National Assembly that the closure affected approximately 100-150 Indian aircraft daily, contributing to a nearly 20% decline in Pakistan’s transit air traffic.
Despite the economic ramifications, the ban remains firmly in place as both nations continue to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes. The ongoing restrictions highlight how airspace control can serve as a tool in international relations, impacting commerce and connectivity across the region.
