Manipur Clashes: Security Forces Deployed Amid Hill District Shutdown
Tension flared in parts of Manipur’s hill districts on Tuesday, April 21 after clashes broke out between members of two tribal communities during a shutdown called by Naga civil bodies. The unrest was reported from villages in Senapati and Kangpokpi districts as bandh supporters confronted local residents amid enforcement of the shutdown.
The United Naga Council (UNC) had called a three-day shutdown to protest an ambush in Ukhrul district on April 18 that left two Tangkhul Naga civilians dead. The bandh began at midnight on April 20 and covered Naga-inhabited districts including Tamenglong, Noney and Kamjong, disrupting normal life with shops closed and vehicular movement severely affected.
Officials said the immediate confrontation started when police tried to clear roadblocks set up by volunteers enforcing the bandh. The situation escalated after residents from neighbouring villages allegedly joined the clashes, leading to stone-pelting between groups.
“During the commotion, a few rounds were fired, but it remains unclear who opened fire and from where,” an official said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Authorities said additional police and security personnel were deployed to sensitive areas, including the affected villages and stretches along National Highway 2, and that the situation has since been brought under control. Security has been tightened across the region to prevent further escalation.
Officials added that the situation is being closely monitored and appealed to all communities to maintain peace and restraint as investigations into the April 18 ambush and the recent clashes continue.
