Russia is preparing a temporary ban on gasoline exports that would take effect from April 1, 2026, and could remain in place until July 31, 2026, according to a government news agency. The move is being framed as a precaution to ensure adequate fuel supplies at home and to curb domestic price rises amid continuing instability in West Asia and heightened volatility in global oil markets.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on Friday instructed the energy ministry to draft a formal proposal to halt petrol exports starting April 1. Government sources say domestic refining output remains broadly unchanged from the previous year and current fuel supplies are normal, but authorities want to act early to guard against possible disruptions abroad.
Novak told reporters the situation in West Asia has stirred sharp instability across global oil and petroleum product markets, producing unusual price swings. He also noted that demand for Russian energy in foreign markets remains strong, but stressed that protecting Russian citizens’ interests and the home economy is the government’s top priority.
The announcement follows a period last year when acute fuel shortages were reported across parts of Russia and in areas of Ukraine under Russian control. Officials attribute those shortages to sustained attacks on Russian refineries and seasonal spikes in demand. In response, Moscow has at times imposed export restrictions on petrol and diesel to stabilise domestic markets.
Industry sources cited in the report say Russia exported roughly 5 million metric tons of petrol last year, equivalent to about 100,000 barrels per day. The government’s proposed export curbs are presented as temporary and targeted, aimed mainly at preventing domestic supply shocks and limiting further price increases while global conditions remain uncertain.
