Unleash Creativity: Experience the Exhilarating Ninth Edition of Whitefield Art Collective in Bengaluru!
The Whitefield Art Collective, now in its ninth edition, has once again captured the creative spirit of the community through its signature exhibit: the Kala Car. This year, a Tesla has taken center stage, embodying the festival’s theme, “Tomorrow, Altered.” The car, a transformative work of art, has been either rescued from scrap or sponsored, showcasing the ingenuity of art students.
Sumi Gupta, curator of the Collective, emphasizes the thoughtful selection process behind the display. “There is nothing random about our selections for this art festival,” she states, noting that the Tesla aligns with their vision of sustainability and electric innovation. This year, art students were entrusted with the Kala Car, allowing them to explore new mediums. Before painting, the car was wrapped in vinyl, facilitating a unique visual impact that pushes the boundaries of traditional art.
The curation process for the exhibit is meticulous, requiring months of preparation and fine-tuning, as Gupta explains. “We advise them on material, size, and site conditions. Our experience from hosting 26 festivals across the country informs what works and what does not.” The time-intensive nature of working with vinyl adds a layer of complexity to the project, but it provides students an invaluable platform for expression.
The Whitefield Art Collective showcases the works of students from various institutions, including Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and the Vogue Institute of Art and Design. With over 300 artworks, installations, and sculptures displayed throughout the VR Bengaluru mall, visitors are encouraged to return multiple times, as the sheer volume of art can be overwhelming in a single visit. Gupta aims to create an immersive, community-oriented experience with a series of workshops and events designed to appeal to all demographics.
The collective has also garnered support from musician and environmentalist Ricky Kej, who inaugurated the exhibit this year, which includes 16 large-scale installations crafted from diverse materials such as terracotta, jute, and fabric. In addition to student submissions, the exhibit features works like “Cinema Reimagined” by Chennai’s Gita Hudson and “Elements” by German artist Nele Martens. For history buffs, the MOD Foundation’s showcase titled “Re:Reading Bangalore” offers a unique lens on the city through archives and visual narratives.
Notably, the exhibit also includes “Pockets of Hope,” presented by UNESCO, featuring photographs that highlight the fragility of marine ecosystems. A special photography competition, “Bengaluru in Focus,” displays a curated selection of 150 images out of over 2,000 entries from both seasoned and novice photographers.
The Whitefield Art Collective, a not-for-profit initiative supported by the Yuj Foundation, has partnered with Caring with Colour this year. This partnership aims to bring rural children’s art to the forefront, allowing these young artists to witness their work displayed in Whitefield.
The event runs until April 12, 2026, at VR Bengaluru, with free entry for all visitors. Attendees can participate in various activities, including workshops and literary events scheduled throughout the month, enhancing the exhibition’s interactive appeal.
