Modi, Trump Demand Urgent Calm in West Asia; Keep Hormuz Open
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on Tuesday, March 24, with US President Donald Trump about the escalating crisis in West Asia, with the conversation stressing the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, US envoy Sergio Gor said. The call came as India pressed for de‑escalation amid rising regional tensions that have threatened energy shipments through the vital waterway.
“President Donald Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open,” Gor wrote on social media, according to the envoy’s post.
Earlier the same day in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable routes to restoring peace in West Asia. He said India remains in constant contact with all parties — including Iran, Israel and the United States — to urge de‑escalation and a negotiated settlement.
The Prime Minister described the conflict as a matter of grave concern and emphasised that India seeks a peaceful resolution through sustained dialogue. He said New Delhi’s objective is both to reduce tensions on the ground and to ensure continued safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, encouraging all sides to resolve differences by peaceful means.
Separately, the Centre said two LPG carriers — Pine Gas and Jag Vasant — have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to India. Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, told an inter‑ministerial briefing that Pine Gas, carrying 45,000 metric tonnes of LPG, is due to arrive at New Mangalore port on March 27, while Jag Vasant, with 47,600 metric tonnes, will reach Kandla port on March 26.
Sinha added that Jag Vasant loaded LPG in Kuwait and Pine Gas picked up its cargo at Ruwais in the UAE; both vessels had been delayed in the region because of the tensions but were recently allowed to sail. He also said 20 Indian‑flagged vessels remain to the west of the Strait of Hormuz.
The developments come as the Strait — a key global route for oil and gas shipments — has been disrupted by rising tensions following US and Israeli strikes in the region in late February. With inputs from agencies.
