Tragic Political Clash After Panchayat Oath-Taking Leaves Several Injured
Ruckus at Rajnagar Panchayat Oath-Taking Ceremony in North Tripura; Multiple Injuries Reported
Agartala, Aug 30: Tensions flared during the oath-taking ceremony of Rajnagar Panchayat in Kadamtala block, North Tripura, as a violent altercation broke out between the workers of the ruling BJP and the opposition CPIM and Congress. The clash, which occurred on Friday afternoon, left several individuals injured, with at least two requiring hospitalization at Dharmanagar District Hospital for treatment.
The conflict arose post-ceremony after none of the political parties secured a majority in the 11-member Panchayat board. The political breakdown saw BJP winning five seats, Congress securing four, and CPM two. Given the results, Congress and CPM formed a coalition to take control of the Panchayat board, a move officially accepted.
According to local accounts, the ceremony at the Rajnagar Community Hall started peacefully at about 11 am. Abdul Mumin, a newly elected BJP member, stated that the event proceeded without issues until Congress and CPM supporters allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on BJP members.
Among those injured in the skirmish were identified as Abdul Mumin, Ratnadip Das, Sujit Das, Altaf Uddin, Sanjay Pal, and Gourmani Das. Initially treated at Kadamtala Community Health Centre, some were later shifted to Dharmanagar District Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
Following the violence, local BJP workers besieged the Kadamtala police station, accusing law enforcement of failing to act against opposition workers. In contrast, Congress and CPM supporters claimed it was BJP members who initiated the attack out of frustration from their electoral losses despite alleged unfair poll practices.
Officials from the sub-division, supported by a large police contingent, arrived promptly to control the situation. Meanwhile, BJP supporters staged a vehement protest outside the police station, demanding justice and condemning the incident.
This clash underscores the rising tensions and political volatility in North Tripura, reflecting broader regional conflicts between major political factions.
