During the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison hinted at a monumental shift in Hollywood’s box office landscape. With Paramount set to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the merged studios aim to produce a staggering 30 films annually-15 from each studio. The deal, valued at $111 billion, awaits regulatory approvals in both the U.S. and Europe.
As it stands, the proposed combination would yield 26 theatrical releases for 2027, with significant announcements anticipated as early as April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Currently, WBD’s slate includes major franchises like Godzilla-Kong, Superman, Batman, Minecraft, The Conjuring, Gremlins, and Lord of the Rings. In contrast, Paramount plans new entries in its popular series including Sonic the Hedgehog, Paranormal Activity, A Quiet Place, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Despite Paramount’s franchises performing well, they have modest box office histories, with none exceeding $350 million globally, according to Comscore data. Their smaller budgets make profitability achievable, but Warner Bros. boasts larger productions that historically yield higher returns. Recent hits include “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which earned $572 million globally, and “The Batman,” with a box office of $772 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, suggests the WBD-Paramount synergy has the potential to become a box office powerhouse in 2027. He notes, “The films on the horizon from the PAR/WBD combo are most impressive,” indicating that the slate could generate record earnings for a single studio.
Ellison’s commitment to the merger was driven by WBD’s impressive performance; last year, they ranked as the second-highest grossing studio, while Paramount placed fifth. Traditionally, Disney has dominated the box office, although Universal briefly held the top spot in 2023, with Warner Bros. and Universal fluctuating between second and third place.
Analysts, however, caution against assuming a guaranteed win. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango, noted that while doubling the slate enhances prospects for a successful 2027, competition poses challenges. Disney’s 2027 lineup includes major franchises like Ice Age, Star Wars, Frozen, and Avengers.
Despite the potential, there’s no assurance that blockbuster franchises will translate to box office success. Robbins explained that consolidating two major studio slates raises questions about efficiency and audience overlap. With only 52 weekends each year, strategic planning will be crucial to avoid cannibalizing sales. Notably, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” is set to release just a week before WBD’s “Godzilla X Kong: Supernova,” likely prompting adjustments to the calendar to optimize financial outcomes.
Looking beyond 2027, the aspirational 30-movie slate may face hurdles. Historical trends indicate that mergers often lead to reduced output and layoffs due to redundancy. Additionally, expensive marketing campaigns for high-budget films complicate matters. As Robbins puts it, “The longevity of such a slate will be challenging, but never say never.”
With the merger in the pipeline, the industry watches closely, eager to see how this blockbuster collaboration will reshape Hollywood’s future.
