Assam Police Threatens Legal Action Over LPG & Fuel Shortage Rumours

By adminitfy
March 12, 2026 2 Min Read

Assam Police on March 12 warned that anyone spreading rumours about shortages of LPG and other petroleum products in the state will face strict legal action, urging citizens not to believe or forward unverified claims. The advisory, posted on X, said those who circulate misleading information about supplies of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, diesel or other fuels could be prosecuted and that “inimical elements” may try to create public panic.

The warning followed a statement by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota a day earlier that local refineries currently meet only about 30% of Assam’s LPG demand, a shortfall that prompted concern over possible supply pressures in the coming days. To curb misinformation and calm consumers, the state government has formed a dedicated media monitoring committee to track rumours, misleading reports and false claims.

Kota said the government has asked all four refineries in Assam to ramp up production to ensure uninterrupted LPG availability. Assam’s top officials — including Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, representatives from the Food and Civil Supplies Department and oil marketing companies — joined a video conference with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and counterparts from other states and union territories to review LPG and diesel stocks and distribution.

During the review, the State Level Coordinator of Indian Oil Corporation assessed Assam’s LPG position and reported that the overall situation remains comfortable, with adequate stock currently available in the state. Assam hosts four refineries: three Indian Oil facilities at Digboi, Guwahati and Bongaigaon, and Numaligarh Refinery Limited at Numaligarh.

Official figures show the Northeast requires roughly 1.91 lakh domestic 14.2 kg LPG cylinders daily, of which Assam accounts for about 1.34 lakh. In the commercial 19 kg segment, the Northeast needs about 5,777 units per day, including around 4,112 in Assam.

Authorities reiterated there is no immediate cause for alarm and asked the public to rely solely on verified, official communications regarding fuel supply and distribution.
