Guwahati police arrested four youths on Sunday night after seizing a truckload of printed leaflets that reportedly contained objectionable material and allegations against the ruling BJP government and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The operation took place around 1:30 am, with the suspects apprehended at a flat near Downtown Guwahati, police said.
The arrested have been identified as Rekibul Haque, Joynal Abedin, Akshay Kumar Bordoloi and Pranjit Patar. A case (No. 135/26) was registered at Dispur Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 61(2), 152, 175, 196, 197 and 353, according to the police statement.
Authorities said the flyers were being transported in a truck that was seized during the raid; the vehicle carries Uttar Pradesh registration number UP75BT9589. All four accused are currently in custody at Dispur Police Station while inquiries continue.
Police sources told reporters that the arrested youths are workers of Laharighat Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar. Investigators said they are probing where the pamphlets were printed, who financed them and how distribution was planned.
Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur condemned the police action as unjustified and said the leaflets formed part of a “chargesheet” that listed ten allegations against the Himanta-led BJP government, material she said had been released by the Assam Congress during Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to the state.
The arrests and seizure highlight ongoing political tensions in Assam between the state administration and the Congress, with authorities treating the matter as both a law-and-order and an investigatory issue. Police have not released further details about the content of the leaflets or any planned distribution activities as the probe continues.
