Assam Cabinet Approves Rs 103 Cr for Silchar’s First Five-Star Hotel
Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 103 crore project to build Silchar’s first five-star hotel, a move aimed at expanding tourism and luxury hospitality in the Barak Valley. The decision is intended to position Silchar as a destination for higher-end leisure and corporate travel in southern Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Polo Hotels Group will oversee the project and invest about Rs 103 crore to develop the property. “This decision sets the stage for introducing a five-star hotel in Silchar. Polo Hotels Group will put in approximately Rs 103 crore to make this project a reality,” Sarma said.
Officials say the hotel will offer roughly 100 premium rooms and suites, combining international hospitality standards with elements of the region’s culture. Planned amenities include specialty restaurants and bars, a resort-style swimming pool, a spa and wellness centre, a gym and fully equipped banquet and conference facilities.
The new property is expected to cater to business summits, exhibitions, weddings and government functions that previously faced limitations due to a shortage of high-end venues in the area. Analysts point out that India’s hotel sector has recovered strongly in recent years, driven in part by growth in corporate travel and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) tourism.
The Silchar project forms part of Polo Hotels Group’s wider expansion across eastern and northeastern India, with planned properties in Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal and Nagaland. Deval Tibrewalla noted the hotel aims to capitalise on Silchar’s growing economic and institutional importance and to open fresh opportunities for tourism and commerce.
Local officials and industry observers say the development should create direct and indirect employment across catering, transportation, event management and other services, with each room supporting multiple jobs. Once operational, the hotel is expected to enable Silchar to host national conferences and large-scale destination events that were previously difficult to accommodate.
