Terror Plot to Target Taylor Swift’s Vienna Concerts Foiled by CIA, Three Arrested
In a startling revelation, CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen disclosed at the annual Intelligence Summit just outside Washington, D.C., that a foiled terrorist plot had endangered the lives of "tens of thousands" of fans at Taylor Swift’s planned concerts in Vienna. The threat led to the abrupt cancellation of all three Eras Tour shows in Austria earlier this month.
Cohen elaborated that the terrorists, associated with the ISIS group, aimed to execute a large-scale attack using explosives and knives, targeting the packed venues which were expected to host around 200,000 fans over three days. The plan was thwarted thanks to the collaboration between the CIA, international intelligence agencies, and Austrian authorities. As a result, three suspects were arrested, including two young Austrians, aged 17 and 19, and an 18-year-old Iraqi.
Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, highlighted that one of the arrested suspects, the 19-year-old Austrian, had confessed to planning a suicide attack during Swift’s concert. Haijawi-Pirchner emphasized, "His aim was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert either today or tomorrow."
Taylor Swift, visibly shaken by the incident, expressed her devastation and gratitude in a heartfelt Instagram post. “Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” she wrote. “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
The foiled attack underscores the ongoing threat of terrorism at high-profile public events and highlights the critical role of international intelligence and security cooperation in preventing such tragedies.
