Guwahati: US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in airstrikes carried out by US and Israeli forces, and Iranian state media reported that several members of Khamenei’s family — including a daughter, a grandchild, a daughter‑in‑law and a son‑in‑law — were also killed. Iran denied the reports through an official from the Supreme Leader’s office, who called the accounts psychological tactics by hostile forces.
The claims of Khamenei’s death were backed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told Iranians there was “strong evidence” the leader had been killed, said the leader’s compound was destroyed and asserted senior commanders and nuclear officials were among those killed. US Central Command said American strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure that posed a direct threat, naming Revolutionary Guard sites, air defences, missile and drone launch locations, and air bases.
In response, Iran launched missiles and drones at Israeli territory and at US military sites in the region. Israel’s military said Iran fired “dozens” of missiles; many were intercepted and no serious injuries were reported, though attacks continued into the evening.
Across the Middle East, governments reacted strongly to Iran’s strikes on neighbouring Arab states, while several countries did not publicly criticise the earlier US and Israeli operations. Nations that maintain diplomatic ties with Israel — including Morocco, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates — condemned Iranian missile strikes on US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union would convene an emergency security meeting on Monday to address rising tensions and to seek measures to prevent further escalation. The situation remains highly fluid, with competing claims and denials from the parties involved.
