An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the central government visited North Sikkim on Friday to carry out an on-site assessment of damage caused by the 2025 monsoon, officials said. The visit, coordinated by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), aimed to evaluate the extent of harm to critical infrastructure and public utilities and to guide restoration priorities.

The IMCT included Gaya Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs; Pradeep Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development; Dr. Sashivardhan Reddy, scientist (DMSG), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO; Dheeraj, Superintending Engineer, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (Guwahati); Jintu Das, Joint Director, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare; Dr. K. R. Rajeshwari, Joint Director, Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance; and Nitin Kumar Verma, Executive Engineer, Central Water Commission, Gangtok.

The SSDMA team was led by director Rajiv Roka, assisted by Deputy Director Keshav Koirala. They were joined by local administration officials including Mangan SDM Sandeep Kumar, Chungthang SDM Arun Chettri, Kabi SDM Monika Rai, and Mangan DPO Karma Dorjee Bhutia, along with officers from several line departments who provided sector-wise briefings during field inspections.

The inspection began and ended in Gangtok and covered multiple sites across North Sikkim, including Phensang (water resources), Phodong (health), Mangshilla (education), Mangan (urban development/roads and bridges), Pakshep (power and rural development), Kazor (rural development), Singhik, Naga (power and rural development), Toong (power and rural development), Chungthang (urban development/public health engineering), and Tarum, where the team reviewed power infrastructure and the newly constructed Tarum bridges.

Teams conducted detailed examinations of damaged roads and bridges, power systems, public health engineering assets, educational institutions and rural development projects along the route. Officials said the assessments will feed into coordinated plans for repair, strengthening and recovery of critical infrastructure in North Sikkim following the 2025 monsoon.
