SUCC Takes Bold Stand: Demands Action Against V-C for Ignoring Governor’s Directive!
The Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has formally appealed to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, urging action against the Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, alleging non-compliance with the Chancellor’s directive to suspend the recruitment of Assistant Professors. In a letter addressed to the Governor, who also serves as the Chancellor of State universities, SUCC chairperson R.S. Sasikumar emphasized the V-C’s essential role as the principal executive and academic authority. Sasikumar highlighted that the V-C is obligated to ensure fairness and adherence to established procedures while faithfully executing the Chancellor’s lawful directives.
The committee has raised concerns that the university is moving forward with faculty appointments despite “adverse observations” from a government auditor regarding an imbalance between faculty numbers and student enrollment. The university is reported to be facing a significant financial crisis, exacerbating worries about its operational sustainability.
In response, Vice-Chancellor K.K. Geethakumary defended her actions, stating that they were in line with a decision made during a Syndicate meeting on February 17 to proceed with faculty recruitment. She mentioned that relevant documents and files concerning the recruitment process have already been submitted to the Chancellor as part of this decision.
Adding another layer to the controversy, Syndicate members aligned with the Left have contended that the Governor lacks the authority to halt faculty recruitment, arguing that such decisions rest solely with the Syndicate. This disagreement highlights ongoing tensions regarding governance and decision-making at the university, a tension that may complicate future actions.
The SUCC’s concerns also reflect wider issues within educational institutions in Kerala, where financial constraints and administrative disputes could hinder effective governance and academic progress. The focus now turns to how the Governor will respond to the SUCC’s appeal and what implications it may have for the university’s recruitment processes and overall administration.
As this situation unfolds, stakeholders in the education sector are closely monitoring developments. The outcome of this appeal could set important precedents for the governance of state-run universities in Kerala, influencing future recruitment policies and the level of oversight exercised by the Chancellor’s office.
With all eyes on the university’s administration and the Governor’s office, the ongoing dialogue surrounding compliance, governance, and academic integrity at Sree Sankaracharya University remains a critical topic for educators, students, and policymakers alike.
