Google faces criticism for potentially endangering users by minimizing safety warnings regarding its AI-generated health advice. In responses to health-related queries, Google features AI Overviews that prompt users to seek professional assistance rather than relying solely on AI summaries. However, as reported by the Guardian, these disclaimers are not visible when users first receive medical advice and only appear after further inquiries, concealed at the bottom of additional information in a smaller font.
The disclaimer states that the information provided is for informational purposes only and advises consulting a professional for medical advice, noting that AI can produce errors. While Google asserts that its AI Overviews encourage users to seek expert advice and often include reminders within the summaries, significant concerns remain regarding the visibility and prominence of these warnings.
Experts and patient advocates have voiced urgent concerns about this lack of visibility and the potential dangers associated with misleading information. Pat Pataranutaporn, an assistant professor at MIT, emphasized that even advanced AI systems can produce inaccurate information, which can pose significant risks in health contexts. He noted that users may misinterpret symptoms or provide insufficient context when asking for advice, making clear disclaimers crucial for prompting critical engagement with the information.
Gina Neff, a responsible AI professor at Queen Mary University of London, criticized the design of AI Overviews, suggesting they prioritize speed over accuracy, contributing to harmful misinformation. Neff’s previous investigations have highlighted the dangers of misleading health information in AI Overviews, stressing the need for visible disclaimers that inform users of the information’s reliability.
Sonali Sharma, a researcher at Stanford’s AIMI, pointed out that the prominent placement of AI Overviews can create a false sense of confidence in users, discouraging them from seeking further information or verifying the AI-generated content. “What I think can lead to real-world harm is that the AI Overviews can often contain partially correct and partially incorrect information,” she cautioned.
A Google spokesperson responded to these criticisms, stating it is misleading to claim that AI Overviews do not encourage users to seek professional medical advice. They asserted that disclaimers are included and highlighted directly within AI Overviews when appropriate. However, the visibility of these disclaimers continues to be a point of contention.
Tom Bishop, head of patient information at the blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan, called for immediate action to enhance the clarity of disclaimers. He argued that misleading health information can pose severe risks, and that disclaimers should be more prominent-ideally at the beginning of users’ interactions with AI Overviews. “I’d like this disclaimer to be right at the top, in a font size that’s easily noticed,” he urged.
In response to these concerns, Google has adjusted its approach by removing AI Overviews for certain medical searches. As the technology evolves, the balance between speed and accuracy in delivering health information becomes increasingly critical.
