State Duo Clinch Bronze in Cambodia: Shillong Celebrates
Shillong-based fighters Rishanskhem P Lipon and Damangpura L Mawlong won bronze medals for India at the 6th Kun Khmer World Championship held in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, from February 10 to 13, officials said on Feb 16. Representing the KIF Kun Khmer Federation–India, both athletes reached the podium in their respective weight categories after strong performances against international opponents.
The pair trained under Muaythai and kickboxing coach Babit Kharsahnoh, who is noted as the first professional Kun Khmer fighter from Meghalaya to compete in Cambodia in 2024. The Indian contingent was led by Vengatachalam Sarona Mahalingam, with Thomas Rangthaluh of Umling, Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district, serving as the state chief for the team.
Rishanskhem, a resident of Nongmynsong Umkdait and a student at St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, earned bronze in the -57kg semi‑professional senior men’s category. He trains at the Tribal Combat Academy in Madanryting and advanced to the podium after an impressive campaign against more experienced international rivals.
Damangpura, who hails from Mairang, secured bronze in the -60kg amateur senior men’s division, contributing another medal to India’s overall tally at the championship. Their success highlights Meghalaya’s growing presence in regional and global combat sports and underscores the role of local training programs and experienced coaching in developing competitive fighters.
