Sixth Accused Arrested in Digboi Mob Killing; Shutdown Lifted
Digboi police arrested a sixth suspect in the mob killing of Budheshwar Garh on Saturday, authorities said, as investigations into the fatal assault that sparked widespread protests in the town intensified. The arrested man, identified as Amardeep Sahu, alias Nene, was taken into custody during a late-night operation after allegedly going into hiding.
Officials said a Digboi Police team, led by Co-District Superintendent of Police Himangshu Gohain and Officer-in-Charge Pranjal Chetia of Digboi Police Station, traced Sahu to Duliajan in Dibrugarh district following specific inputs. With this arrest, the total number of people detained in the case has risen to six.
Earlier arrests in the case include Shero Khan, Sonu Bhattacharjee, Bikram Sahani, Ajit Ali and Ramajan Khan; police sources said all five remain in judicial custody. The case is registered at Digboi Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and investigators are reconstructing the sequence of events surrounding the assault, which occurred near the Chariali Bazar area.
Police are examining CCTV footage from multiple locations and said the analysis could lead to further arrests. “Further arrests may follow based on analysis of surveillance recordings,” a senior officer added.
The killing prompted a three-day shutdown in Digboi, with markets and businesses closed amid public anger; the situation eased on Saturday evening after discussions between the district administration, police and community representatives, after which the shutdown was lifted. The local MLA visited Assam Medical College and Hospital to meet the bereaved family and handed over Rs 50,000 in financial assistance to the deceased’s wife.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to remain calm as authorities continue to gather evidence and process leads.
