Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington has accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of “spying” on her online searches regarding documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. This allegation emerged during a heated congressional hearing on Wednesday, where Bondi was seen holding a printout labeled “Jayapal Pramila Search History.” Journalists captured images of the document, which reportedly contained at least eight files from the Justice Department’s collection of Epstein records, complete with file numbers and brief descriptions, as reported by CBS News.
During the hearing, Jayapal demanded an apology from Bondi to Epstein survivors for allegedly failing to protect their personal information. She questioned attendees who had yet to meet with the Justice Department, urging them to raise their hands. Jayapal’s concerns resonate within a broader context, as she is not the only Democratic lawmaker raising issues surrounding the Justice Department’s system for accessing Epstein files.
Rep. Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia highlighted similar frustrations, noting that lawmakers had access to only four computers in a cramped room, each requiring unique login credentials. He criticized the lack of phone usage and the allowance for handwritten notes only, suggesting the setup was intended to obstruct lawmakers’ ability to gather information.
In response to Jayapal’s accusations, Bondi criticized the Biden-era Attorney General Merrick Garland for his approach to the Epstein case. “I’m not going to get in the gutter for her theatrics,” she remarked, deflecting the criticisms aimed at her.
Rep. Jamie Raskin weighed in, labeling the actions of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Bondi as illegal. He accused them of withholding documents from Congress and the public, failing to pursue any indictments against Epstein or his co-conspirators, and allegedly monitoring congressional members during their oversight responsibilities. Raskin characterized this surveillance as a significant infringement on congressional oversight.
“It is an outrage that DOJ is tracking Members’ investigative steps undertaken to ensure that DOJ is complying with the Epstein File Transparency Act,” Raskin asserted. He called for an immediate cessation of tracking members’ searches, urging the DOJ to open the Epstein review to senior congressional staff and to publicly release all relevant files, with survivors’ information properly redacted as mandated by federal law.
Raskin also declared his intention to request an investigation from the DOJ Inspector General, deeming the reported behavior an “outrageous abuse of power.” He emphasized the need for a comprehensive reassessment of how the Epstein case has been handled in light of these revelations.
