Nagaland Adhoc Teachers Begin Hunger Strike, Demand Justice
The All Nagaland Adhoc Teachers’ Group (ANATG) 2015 batch announced on February 9 that it will escalate its ongoing sit-in at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima to a peaceful hunger strike starting February 10, citing the state government’s failure to give a positive response to a memorandum submitted on February 6, 2026. The sit-in began after a joint meeting with education department officials on February 3 and has continued through February 9.
Core Committee member Pekato Zhimomi said the intensification was necessary because the government did not respond positively to the group’s February 6 letter. The teachers are demanding immediate regularisation of 1,166 members of the ANATG-2015 batch based on the HPC Agreement signed with the government on October 7, 2022.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the ANATG’s Core Committee reiterated its demand for service regularisation and said it would consider suspending protests depending on the nature and feasibility of any written communication from the department. The group has received a request from the department asking them to suspend the protest while it takes steps to examine regularisation, but the committee said it would proceed with the planned hunger strike regardless; venue and start time had not been finalised at the time of reporting.
The dispute traces back to suitability tests conducted by the Directorate of School Education on May 20 and 23, 2017, after which the department submitted a memorandum on August 8, 2017 seeking regularisation of 1,166 teachers. Delays led to protests in October 2018, and the government granted 6th ROP to ANATG members on November 22, 2018. Continued inaction prompted a hunger strike beginning September 26, 2022, and an agreement between the parties on October 7, 2022.
On January 28, 2026, the School Education department again filed details of existing and vacant posts with the Chairman of the Committee on Regularisation, enclosing the ANATG’s ultimatum. According to the Core Committee, any suspension or continuation of the protest will depend on the written response the government provides.
