Urgent Call for Bir Lachit Sena Chief and 27 Indigenous Leaders Amid Assam’s Growing Law and Order Crisis
The Sivasagar District Administration has issued summons to 27 indigenous leaders from various organizations, taking a decisive stance against potential threats to regional peace. This move follows a spate of troubling incidents, prompting authorities to enforce strict measures to avert any disturbances.
The summons, orchestrated by Executive Magistrate Nakib Sayeed Baruah, specifically target key figures from indigenous groups and student unions. These individuals have been accused of participating in illegal gatherings and using high-decibel loudspeakers to escalate tensions among different communities.
Citing Section 164(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the notices compel these leaders to appear before the Executive Magistrate on August 25, 2024, to justify their actions. Among those summoned are Basanta Gogoi, President of the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), and Sringkhal Chaliha, Administrative Secretary of Bir Lachit Sena Asom. These leaders face allegations of inciting local minority communities and organizing the unlawful closure of businesses in Sivasagar.
The directive also mandates that those summoned provide a bond of Rs 2.5 lakh and a surety of Rs 50,000, guaranteeing their commitment to maintaining peace for six months. Failure to comply with these conditions could result in severe legal repercussions, including potential arrest and fines.
Dubbed ‘Operation Bond,’ this initiative by the district administration highlights the seriousness with which local authorities are addressing the potential escalation of unrest in Sivasagar. The situation remains delicate, and authorities are maintaining vigilant oversight to ensure the preservation of peace and stability in the area.
