Assam Records 580 Rape Cases Up to July 2024: CM Sarma Reveals Alarming Stats
Guwahati, Aug 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the state has registered 580 rape cases up to July 2024. Sharing the information via a social media post, CM Sarma highlighted the continuous efforts of the state government to create a safer environment, particularly for women.
Sarma’s post included a detailed year-wise breakdown of rape cases registered in Assam since 2001, revealing a troubling total of 40,065 cases. The year 2019 saw the highest number of incidents, with 3,546 cases recorded. This revelation comes amidst a significant increase in crimes against women in Assam. Sarma had recently condemned the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon’s Dhing on August 22, noting that the state had seen 22 to 23 cases of such crimes in the last two months alone.
“Every single incident of rape must be unequivocally condemned, as it represents a grave violation of human dignity. It is our collective responsibility to work towards eliminating this heinous crime from society,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the judiciary to expedite justice in cases involving crimes against women. At the 150th anniversary of the District Bar Association in Silchar, he urged district judges and magistrates to establish fast-track courts for sensitive cases.
Opposition Congress criticised the government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) vice president Bobbeeta Sharma expressed deep concern over the rising number of crimes against women, describing the situation as a “complete breakdown of law and order.” Sharma argued that Sarma’s disclosure on social media was an implicit admission of the government’s inability to protect women.
Moreover, Sharma raised concerns about potential unreported cases and demanded a thorough investigation into incidents that may have gone undocumented.
The rising number of crimes against women in Assam has prompted calls for more robust measures and prompt judicial action to ensure justice and safety for women in the state.
