Meta Thrills with Affordable Quest Models, Pauses High-Stakes Apple Vision Pro Rivalry | Tech News Update
Meta Eyes Affordable Mixed Reality Headset and Halts Rival to Apple’s Vision Pro
Meta appears to be gearing up to release a budget-friendly version of its mixed reality headset, Meta Quest 3. The anticipated model, possibly named Quest 3S, may be unveiled during the Meta Connect event on September 25 and 26.
Introduced in June last year, the Meta Quest 3 led to speculation about a Lite version. Bloomberg reveals that Meta could lower the price by selling the controller separately, which may still bring the combined cost close to the original Quest 3. The Quest 3S might include controllers, albeit different from those with the Quest 3.
In other developments, Bloomberg notes that Meta may debut AR glasses named Orion, reminiscent of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
On a contrasting note, Meta has reportedly abandoned its plans for a mixed reality headset designed to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. Originally slated for a 2027 release under the codename La Jolla, the headset aimed to feature micro OLED displays akin to the Vision Pro. The decision to cease development came after a lackluster market reception for the Vision Pro, prompting Meta to instruct Reality Labs employees to discontinue the project.
Apple, meanwhile, is working on a more affordable headset with fewer features, targeting the high-end iPhone price range.
Furthermore, Meta discontinued the Quest Pro in 2023 due to poor reviews and sluggish sales but continues to work on the Quest 4, a successor to the Quest 3, slated for launch in 2026.
