Mizoram’s Exciting Hindi-Speaking Day: Boosting Language Skills in Schools

The Mizoram government has announced the introduction of a Hindi-speaking day in all schools across the state to enhance students’ proficiency in the language. This initiative, as stated by School Education Minister Vanlalthansai, will take place once a month under the oversight of the state school education department, requiring both students and teachers to communicate in Hindi on the specified day.

During a press conference, the minister emphasized the goal of this initiative: to improve spoken Hindi among students, particularly those in rural areas. Mizoram, characterized by its hilly terrain and dominated by the Mizo tribal community, has limited exposure to Hindi, owing to the small number of Hindi speakers in the region. While Mizo and English serve as the state’s official languages, many Mizo students encounter language barriers when pursuing higher education or employment opportunities outside the state, where proficiency in Hindi is increasingly valued.

To facilitate this, the government will provide training to Hindi teachers to ensure that students gain fluency in the language. Additionally, special support will be available for students who do not speak Hindi. The government plans to formally announce this Hindi-speaking day and will craft a syllabus for spoken Hindi through the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Furthermore, a home language day is also set to be introduced in all English-medium schools to encourage the usage of local languages.

Minister Vanlalthansai also raised concerns about the growing prevalence of English at the expense of local languages, even within families and communities. To counter this trend, the government intends to take steps to preserve indigenous languages. He noted that all teachers appointed by the state government will be required to learn at least five languages within five years of their recruitment, in accordance with the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) criteria and Supreme Court guidelines.

This policy initiative reflects the state’s commitment to achieving a balance between fostering national language proficiency and preserving local linguistic identity.
