Google is elevating the capabilities of its AI services by making Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews in regions where this feature is accessible. This significant update, detailed in a recent blog post from Google, enhances the reasoning capabilities of AI Overviews, which now reach over one billion users globally.
The Gemini 3 upgrade expands the sophisticated reasoning features that first powered AI Mode, providing users with top-tier AI responses directly on search results pages. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, explained, “We’re rolling out Gemini 3 as the default model for AI Overviews globally, so even more people will be able to access best-in-class AI responses, directly in the results page for questions where it’s helpful.” Originally launched in November, Gemini 3 enriches AI Mode and is now seamlessly integrated into AI Overviews.
One of the standout features of this update is the new ability for users to transition from an AI Overview to AI Mode with ease. Users can ask follow-up questions directly from an AI Overview, allowing the context from their initial query to carry over. Stein highlighted the reasoning behind this shift, noting, “People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions – sometimes to find information quickly, like a sports score or the weather, where a simple result is all you need. But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic deeply, you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience.” He emphasized that this results in “one fluid experience with prominent links to continue exploring,” enhancing user engagement and satisfaction.
Earlier trials of this conversational flow, which began in December on mobile, revealed that users preferred this natural progression into deeper discussions. Google’s testing shows that maintaining context from the initial AI Overview makes the search experience more contextually relevant and helpful.
This latest update is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates Google’s commitment to continuously improving user interaction with AI-powered responses. Since the introduction of AI Overviews, each iteration has aimed to streamline the process, making it easier for users to obtain coherent and relevant AI-driven information. The release of Gemini 3 into AI Mode introduced deeper query capabilities and dynamic response layouts, and with both AI Overviews and AI Mode now utilizing the same model, variations in citation patterns could emerge.
Looking ahead, Google has indicated that these updates are rolling out starting today, although their availability will depend on the market.
