Five Remarkable Honorees from Assam Celebrate Northeast’s Triumph
Guwahati, Jan 25: As India prepares for the 77th Republic Day celebrations, five noteworthy individuals from Assam are among the 113 recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards, highlighting their significant yet often uncelebrated contributions to society. The Padma Shri award has been conferred to Sattriya dance exponent Haricharan Saikia, sculptor Nuruddin Ahmed, silk expert Jogesh Deuri, Karbi folk music advocate Pokila Lektepi, and the late Kabindra Purkayastha, a former Union Minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.
This recognition serves as a national acknowledgment of their enduring commitment to grassroots work across various fields. The Northeast region is well represented this year, with notable recipients including Sangyusang S. Pongener from Nagaland, Techi Gubin from Arunachal Pradesh, Yumnam Jatra Singh from Manipur, Naresh Chandra Dev Varma from Tripura, and Hally War from Meghalaya, each selected for this esteemed civilian honor.
The awards reflect an increasing recognition of community-driven efforts and social contributions from the Northeast. Reports indicate that this year’s Padma Awards aim to honor individuals who have acted as change makers, tirelessly working to enhance lives without seeking public acknowledgment.
The Padma Awards, one of India’s highest civilian honors, are announced each year on the eve of Republic Day. They are bestowed in three categories: Padma Vibhushan for exceptional service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a higher order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service. These awards highlight achievements across a spectrum of fields, particularly those that promote public service and social impact.
In a related announcement, nearly 1,000 personnel from police, fire, home guard, and civil defense services across the country were also recognized with gallantry and service medals, reflecting the government’s broader initiative to honor service and sacrifice on the eve of Republic Day.
