Empowering Change: How One Kenyan Woman Transforms Family Farms into Climate Tech to Outsmart Drought

Agriculture in Kenya is a cornerstone of the economy, employing about 75% of the population. However, the livelihoods of farmers are increasingly threatened by climate change and the degradation of productive land, impacting not just Kenya, but the entire African continent. As droughts and extreme weather become more common, innovator Maryanne Gichanga emphasizes the critical need for technology-driven solutions to help the agricultural community adapt and thrive.

Ahead of the International Day of Clean Energy on January 26, Gichanga spoke to the UN about her work in a traditionally male-dominated industry. By employing solar-powered sensors and AI-enhanced satellite data, she equips farmers with essential insights into soil health, crop conditions, and weather patterns.

Drawing from her own upbringing in a farming family, Gichanga has witnessed firsthand the struggles that come with climate-induced challenges. “When the harvest was bad, it directly affected our quality of life,” she shared. This experience fueled her desire to offer solutions, ultimately leading to the creation of her company aimed at supporting smallholder farmers. With backing from Greenovations Africa, an initiative championed by the UN that supports women entrepreneurs, Gichanga found crucial training and seed capital to kickstart her venture.

Navigating a patriarchal landscape poses unique challenges. Gichanga noted, “People would rather work with a man,” pointing to widespread skepticism about female leadership in agriculture. “What really helped me was persistence and having demonstrations to show our capabilities.” Her dedication underlines the importance of collaboration and resilience. “You cannot give up. Many people depend on you,” she added.

The transformation of lives through empowerment is Gichanga’s greatest reward. She highlights the tangible shifts in farming practices and economic stability as markers of success. “When a farmer who once struggled to buy seeds now controls the prices of their harvest, it represents a significant victory,” she explained.

Gichanga’s message to aspiring women and girls in agriculture or climate action is one of encouragement: “Go for it. You will learn along the way.” She reassures that support is available-both financially and in terms of training. “There is no perfect time to start. Don’t be scared!”

The challenges faced by Kenya’s farming community are significant, but with innovative solutions and persistent advocates like Maryanne Gichanga, there is hope for a more resilient future. As climate change continues to threaten both livelihoods and food security, the cultivation of technology-supported agriculture becomes not just a necessity but a beacon of possibility for millions across Africa.
