Game-Changer: AMMK’s Return to NDA Gives BJP Major Boost in Tamil Nadu
Opposition parties found a renewed sense of hope on Wednesday as TTV Dhinakaran, leader of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam (AMMK), announced that his party will rejoin the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in anticipation of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 2026. This decision came after Dhinakaran’s meeting with Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who oversees the BJP’s operations in Tamil Nadu.
Dhinakaran emphasized the importance of unity among opposition forces, stating, “We had differences in the past, but they should not hinder our collective goal of reinstating a people’s government in Tamil Nadu as soon as possible.” Highlighting the need for cooperation, he remarked, “We should not allow minor issues to overshadow the greater interests of our party and the people of Tamil Nadu. Sacrifices made for the public good only strengthen us,” as reported by ANI.
As supporters chanted the name of Jayalalithaa, the revered former Chief Minister, Dhinakaran stressed the necessity for the leaders and followers of Amma to unite, emphasizing the need to revive her governance style in the state.
Welcoming AMMK back into the NDA fold, Goyal declared that the alliance will persist in opposing the “anti-people policies” of the DMK-Congress alliance. He stated, “The AMMK has rejoined us, and together we will continue our battle against the adversities initiated by the DMK-Congress. Tamil Nadu desires a change and politics that prioritizes its citizens.”
With AMMK’s return, the NDA-led by AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the BJP-hopes to consolidate its influence and emerge as a principal opposition force in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Opposition leaders anticipate that this rejoining will halt the fragmentation of AIADMK votes during elections, particularly in southern districts where Dhinakaran is notably influential.
The Tamil Nadu assembly elections are slated for the first half of 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the state for an election rally in Chengalpattu district on January 23. Additionally, actor Vijay has launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and announced his intent to contest in the elections, further invigorating the political arena.
