Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Bold Response to Congress on Bihu Controversy
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress party on Wednesday, January 14, accusing it of disrespecting Assamese culture and misrepresenting the spiritual significance of Magh Bihu by associating it with violence. He described the controversy surrounding the Meji fire as “deeply unfortunate,” asserting that this traditional ritual represents purification, hope, and the elimination of bad omens, rather than destruction.
Defending Assamese customs, Sarma emphasized that Bihu, the most esteemed festival for the Assamese people, has never been associated with hatred or harm. He explained, “The Meji is lit to cleanse negativity and darkness. It is meant to wash away sorrow and bring light, prosperity, and well-being into every household.”
The Chief Minister highlighted that rituals across the three Bihus-Bohag, Magh, and Kati-are imbued with positivity, viewing fire as a symbol of renewal and spiritual enlightenment. “Assamese people have never used Bihu as an opportunity to harm others. Burning a Meji is not akin to burning a person’s house or office; that reflects a mentality of violence and hatred, which has no place in Bihu,” he stated.
Sarma further criticized Congress for a social media post that allegedly depicted the burning of Vajpayee Bhawan, claiming that the party is deliberately misrepresenting the festival’s cultural meaning. He added, “The purpose of Meji’s fire is constructive, not destructive. It is the fire of light that dispels darkness. Unfortunately, Congress does not grasp this.”
Intensifying his remarks, the Chief Minister accused Congress of severing its ties with Assamese language, culture, and traditions. “A party lacking understanding of Assamese identity cannot honor its festivals, which is why such insensitive images are being shared,” he said.
Sarma noted that no official action would be taken regarding the incident, asserting that public awareness itself would be the most effective response. “The people of Assam understand the true essence of Magh Bihu. They know what Meji represents,” he remarked.
Reiterating the cultural and spiritual principles of the festival, the Chief Minister concluded by stating that the Meji fire is lit with prayers for the erasure of sorrow, illumination of homes, and the establishment of harmony in society-values that are central to Assamese life.
