At least six individuals, including four police officers, were injured in a road accident involving an escort vehicle from the convoy of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dibrugarh district, Assam, on Sunday, January 4. The incident occurred in the Hatiali area under the Chabua police station when one of the escort vehicles collided with a civilian vehicle.
At the time of the crash, Union Minister Sonowal was en route to his hometown of Bindhakata in Chabua. Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip confirmed the accident and stated that all injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital in an ambulance that was part of the convoy.
According to the SSP, “Six people sustained injuries in the accident, including four police personnel assigned to the security escort.” Medical officials at Assam Medical College and Hospital reported that all injured individuals were stable and not in danger. Hospital authorities added that none of the injuries were life-threatening, and patients were kept under observation as a precaution.
Both Union Minister Sonowal and Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli, who was also traveling with the convoy, escaped injury and continued their journey after ensuring that those injured received medical attention. Preliminary findings suggest that the accident resulted from unexpected vehicle movements on the busy road, though a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the precise cause.
Authorities removed the damaged vehicles from the road to restore normal traffic flow, which had been briefly disrupted. Police officials noted that necessary legal steps have been initiated, and further investigations are underway. Minister Sonowal, a former Chief Minister of Assam, often travels across the state for both official and personal reasons, accompanied by a security convoy as per standard protocol.
