Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the essential role of the media as the fourth pillar of democracy during his address on January 3 at the 17th Central Mid-Term Conference of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU). He urged journalists to uphold press freedom, ethical reporting, and public accountability in today’s intricate information landscape. Sonowal characterized journalists as vigilant guardians of society and the authentic voice of the people, emphasizing that the press holds a fundamental responsibility in protecting freedom of expression and reinforcing democratic values.

“The media’s role as society’s conscious watchdog is immeasurable. As the voice of the people, journalists have consistently worked to defend freedom of speech and ensure accountability,” Sonowal remarked. He underscored the importance of responsible journalism, encouraging media professionals to prioritize truth, credibility, and ethical standards while resisting misinformation and sensationalism. According to him, journalism should serve as a bridge between the government and citizens, amplifying public concerns and fostering social harmony.

The Union Minister also pointed out the significance of dialogue, coordination, and consensus-building, asserting that constructive media engagement can strengthen societal fabric. He urged journalists to adapt continuously to new challenges by upgrading their skills, embracing emerging technologies, and maintaining professional integrity rooted in public interest.

Prominent figures such as MLAs Sanjay Kishan and Bolin Chetia, along with senior journalists and other dignitaries, attended the conference. Later that day, Sonowal visited the Makum Legislative Assembly Constituency, where he laid foundation stones, inaugurated welfare projects, and interacted with beneficiaries of the Prime Minister’s flagship schemes. He acknowledged local entrepreneurs, recognizing their contribution to enhancing the region’s economy. “Under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development has reached the last mile. Welfare schemes are directly empowering beneficiaries and bolstering grassroots entrepreneurship, transforming governance into a people-centric model,” Sonowal stated.

In Panitola, he inaugurated a newly constructed Senior Citizens’ Office Bhawan, built under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) at an investment of Rs 15 lakh. This facility aims to enhance institutional support and community engagement for senior citizens during the 2024–25 financial year. Sonowal affirmed that such infrastructure showcases the government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring dignity, accessibility, and support for the elderly at the grassroots level.

Several public representatives and officials, including Makum Municipal Board chairperson Archana Saikia, the Vice Principal of Makum College Papori Baruah, Dibrugarh Development Authority chairman Pulak Gohain, Assam State Housing Board chairman Kushakanta Bora, BJP Tinsukia district president Ashim Hazarika, and other local leaders were present at the events.
