Shocking Encounter: Bengaluru Woman’s Heart-Wrenching Experience of Harassment by Drunk Man on Namma Metro
A woman has alleged that she was harassed by a 46-year-old man on a Bengaluru Metro train, sparking widespread attention after her video recounting the incident went viral. The incident occurred on Tuesday near the bustling Majestic interchange, a major transit hub in the city. The woman stated that the man, identified as Mutappa, frequently sat close to her, touching her inappropriately, leading her to believe his actions were intentional rather than accidental.
In her video statement, the woman described the atmosphere on the train as typical until the latter part of her journey. She noted that commuters were mostly absorbed in their phones when she began to feel increasingly uncomfortable. Initially seated between two passengers, she explained that when one man vacated his seat, a new passenger took his place and sat uncomfortably close, leaving her with little personal space. Despite her efforts to adjust herself, she soon felt a hand pressing against her in a manner she found disturbing.
“At that moment, I was frozen when I realized that someone was intentionally doing this to me. I was really angry,” she recalled. Once she recognized that the man’s actions were deliberate, she resolved to take action as her destination approached, fearing he might harass others if she remained silent.
As her stop came, she stood up and slapped him. “I was really angry. I react first and then think. I decided I can’t let this person pass without consequences,” she said. Her vigorous response left the man in distress, with the woman noting that he appeared to be both crying and smiling, indicating a mix of denial and remorse. He reportedly spoke in Kannada, a language she did not understand, but she asserted that he acknowledged his wrongdoing.
Witnesses indicated that the man had been behaving inappropriately for some time prior to the incident. The woman asserted that he seemed intoxicated during the altercation. Following her confrontation, Metro security personnel intervened and brought both individuals to the Metro office, where she insisted on contacting the police to file a formal complaint.
Subsequently, she lodged a complaint at the Upparpet Police Station. The authorities reported that the altercation took place around 7 p.m. on December 23. A non-cognizable report was filed against the accused for indecent behavior and sexual harassment, and an investigation is currently underway. Authorities are analyzing CCTV footage from the Metro to gather more evidence regarding the incident.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about harassment in public transportation systems, prompting discussions about women’s safety and the need for more stringent measures to combat such behavior. As investigations continue, the experience shared by the woman has resonated widely, underlining the critical need for societal awareness and accountability in addressing harassment.
