Doomdooma Press Club Honors Legacy of Prafulla Govinda Baruah
A somber atmosphere filled the Doomdooma Press Club on December 27 as journalists, academics, and local citizens gathered to honor the late Prafulla Govinda Baruah, Chairman Emeritus of the Assam Tribune Group and editor of The Assam Tribune. His death has created an irreplaceable gap in Assam’s media landscape.
Dr. Samudragupta Kashyap, a respected senior journalist and current chancellor of Nagaland University, characterized PG Baruah as “a worthy son of a worthy father.” He acknowledged that PG Baruah upheld the legacy of his father, Radha Govinda Baruah, transforming the Assam Tribune Group into a prominent newspaper institution. Dr. Kashyap served as the chief speaker during the tribute event organized by the Doomdooma Press Club.
Reflecting on PG Baruah’s leadership, Dr. Kashyap shared that journalists and staff members of the Assam Tribune Group always felt secure under his guidance. He emphasized that PG Baruah steadfastly adhered to the ideals of journalism, setting benchmarks for responsible practices in both The Assam Tribune and Dainik Asam.
Dr. Kashyap described PG Baruah as soft-spoken yet resolute in his convictions, making him an exemplary proprietor-editor, a rare find in contemporary journalism. He also highlighted how PG Baruah consistently reminded journalists of their social responsibilities and safeguarded the newspaper group against political manipulation.
Tributes flowed from various speakers, including Dr. Meena Devi Baruah, president of the Tinsukia district unit of the Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti; Uddhav Sharma, a retired tea estate manager; Dr. Kamaleswar Kalita, principal of Doomdooma College; Dr. Amorjit Saikia, principal of Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College in Doomdooma; and senior journalist Dhiren Deka, all praising PG Baruah’s integrity, humility, and significant contributions to journalism.
Veteran journalist Arjun Baruah, who served as the correspondent for Dainik Asam from Doomdooma for 51 years, initiated the tribute by lighting a lamp before a portrait of PG Baruah and offering floral tributes, fostering a reflective mood for the gathering. The event was overseen by Manoj Dutta, president of the Doomdooma Press Club. At the start, Club secretary Pradip Kumar Moran outlined the purpose of the program, with Abhijit Khataniar, vice president of the Press Club, managing the proceedings.
