Urgent Call for Comprehensive Documentation in Assamese Literary Criticism
Guwahati, Dec 27: Literary criticism has been notably overlooked in Assam, with an urgent need for comprehensive assessment and documentation across various genres of Assamese literature, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama. This was highlighted by educationist and critic Dr. Ananda Bormudoi during the launch of Dr. Prapti Thakur’s book, “Asomiya Suti Galpa: Ek Parikrama,” held at the Purbayon Publication office in Panbazar.
Dr. Bormudoi emphasized that Assamese literature suffers from a severe lack of critical documentation, impeding the authentic evaluation of its literary genres. He called for more critical works like those produced by Dr. Thakur, who has dedicated much of her career to analyzing Assamese short stories. He pointed out that literary criticism is often a thankless pursuit, which dissuades potential critics due to its unglamorous nature.
He further asserted that Assamese short stories rank among the best globally, yet the scarcity of critical works hampers their proper evaluation and appreciation. Dr. Bormudoi advocated for the creation of a thorough chronological record of Assamese literature, along with a concerted effort to document various literary genres.
Short story writer Bonti Senchowa praised Dr. Thakur’s diligent and sustained efforts as an Assamese short story critic, stating that such critics are rare and that Dr. Thakur is poised to become an authority in her field. Writer Dr. Anuradha Sarma echoed the sentiment, underlining the necessity for a comprehensive chronological history across different literary genres while noting the challenges critics face in considering the social contexts of their times.
Dr. Thakur, who serves as the Principal of Sarupathar College, reflected on her long journey with short stories since childhood and her initial forays into critical writing regarding the Ramdhenu era’s narratives. Dr. Amrit Kumar Upadhyay from Purbayan Prakashan remarked that Dr. Thakur’s book would significantly contribute to filling the gap in critical literature concerning Assamese works.
The event was hosted by Rebat Mahanta and concluded with a musical performance featuring a number by Zubeen Garg, performed by Ashish Banik.
