Zubeen Garg’s Shocking Allegations: Swimming While Intoxicated Exposed!
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police has submitted a comprehensive chargesheet regarding the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, which introduces serious new allegations. The chargesheet claims that Garg was encouraged to swim in the sea while intoxicated, and those nearby failed to take necessary precautions to avert the tragedy.
Garg, who participated in the 4th North East India Festival (NEIF) in Singapore, tragically lost his life under unclear circumstances while swimming on September 19. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly asserted that Garg was murdered and has pledged to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The SIT’s chargesheet, encompassing 12,000 pages with 8,698 pages of supporting documents, was delivered to the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Guwahati last Friday. Among those charged with murder are Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.
Additionally, Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, face charges of criminal conspiracy and breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating entrusted funds or property. The chargesheet indicates that Garg participated in a yacht outing with the Assam Association Singapore prior to the festival, where he fell unconscious while swimming. He was later pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital. Authorities in Singapore attributed the cause of death to drowning, while Assam Police confirmed that Garg had been intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Siddhartha Sharma is accused of creating a state of intoxication that compromised Garg’s motor skills and judgment, allowing him to swim without a life jacket against medical advice. Shyamkanu Mahanta is alleged to have provided Garg with whiskey despite medical warnings, neglected to inform yacht organizers of Garg’s medical condition, and delayed the call for emergency medical services, with an ambulance reportedly arriving 75 minutes after the incident.
Drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami allegedly encouraged Garg to enter the water and did not attempt a rescue, while singer Amritprava Mahanta is accused of promoting excessive alcohol consumption and failing to alert others about Garg’s perilous state. She purportedly urged him to swim without a life jacket.
The chargesheet also claims that Sharma sought to gain financially from Garg’s situation, diversifying his financial interests through various avenues. Zubeen’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, is charged with prompting Shekhar and Garg to swim long distances and entering the water late to assist. The two security officers are accused of misappropriating Garg’s property for personal gain.
All seven defendants appeared virtually before the Kamrup (Metro) CJM on Tuesday, with a subsequent hearing set for December 22. The court approved virtual appearances due to concerns over potential law and order issues. Advocate Dhrubajyoti Das has been appointed by the District Legal Services Authority to represent the accused following the local Bar Association’s refusal to take on their defense.
