Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan, who also serves as the administrator of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), announced plans to request ₹1,200 crore from the Karnataka government aimed at addressing significant issues in the city’s underground drainage (UGD) system. This information was shared during a recent phone-in program at the MCC headquarters on December 18, 2025, where residents voiced concerns about untreated sewage entering the city’s drainage network.
Mr. Darshan highlighted a range of factors contributing to the problem. He noted that many residential apartments, particularly those located off narrow roads, have been constructed without adequate sewage treatment facilities or are utilizing outdated systems. “Some properties lack their own Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), while others have STPs that are no longer operational,” he explained. Due to limited space, some apartments are unable to install new STPs, and certain households remain unconnected to the UGD system altogether.
Concerns regarding untreated sewage overflowing into stormwater drains have been previously raised with District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Mr. Darshan emphasized the importance of connecting all households in Mangaluru to the UGD network. “We plan to request approximately ₹1,200 crore in the upcoming State Budget,” he stated. The funding will not only focus on connecting households but will also cover essential repairs to aging UGD lines and address missing links within the network.
Residents have expressed their frustration, particularly in areas like Yekkur and Naguri, where untreated sewage flows through drains, creating unpleasant odors. Savitri Devi, a Yekkur resident, pointed out the health hazards posed by stagnant sewage, which attracts mosquitoes. Similarly, Usha Nayak from Naguri echoed her concerns, highlighting the discomfort faced by neighbors. Mohammed Saleem, a resident of Mahakalipadpu, specifically called out three residential apartments in his locality for contributing to the issue by allowing untreated water to drain into the system.
The MCC’s initiatives come at a crucial time when community health and sanitation are top priorities. The proposal for funding aligns with a broader strategy to enhance public infrastructure and improve living conditions across Mangaluru. The MCC aims to rectify the situation as quickly as possible, ensuring that all residents benefit from a well-maintained and functional drainage system.
