Unlocking Futures: NSDCI and Manipur University Empower Youth for Japan Jobs

In a significant development aimed at enhancing overseas job opportunities for the youth of Manipur, NSDC International Limited (NSDCI) and Manipur University have reached an agreement to establish a Japanese Language Training Centre on the university’s campus. This partnership, formalized on Monday, will run through the Department of Vocational Studies and Skill Development (DVSSD) at Manipur University. The initiative is designed to equip Manipuri youth with proficiency in the Japanese language and job-ready skills suitable for employment in Japan. It is in line with the existing Government-to-Government (G2G) agreements between India and Japan and focuses on high-demand sectors including healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, and manufacturing.

The agreement was signed by NSDCI Chief Executive Officer Alok Kumar and Manipur University Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, with the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh and senior officials from the state government, university administration, and NSDC. Notable attendees included IAS officer N. Bandana Devi, the Secretary of Skill, Labour, Employment and Entrepreneurship, along with senior faculty and NSDC representatives.

Prof. Lokendra Singh remarked that the initiative presents a crucial opportunity for students, expressing optimism that it would enhance the global employability of youth from the state. Stakeholders emphasized that the centre would provide not just structured Japanese language training but also cultural orientation and clear pathways for overseas placement.

Participants noted the need for extensive outreach beyond the university to maximize enrollment and job placement outcomes. They suggested engaging colleges, district-level skill centers, and community platforms while supporting these efforts with systematic career counseling. Officials mentioned that showcasing successful placements and alumni experiences would foster trust among students and their families.

The meeting concluded with a consensus that robust institutional support and effective awareness campaigns could expand this model to similar international programs in the future. Manipur University officials highlighted that students from the DVSSD have already achieved strong records in both national and international job placements across various sectors such as aviation, hospitality, banking, teaching, and manufacturing. Over the past two years, 28 alumni, supported by NSDC International, secured jobs in Japan’s hospitality sector with average salaries nearing Rs 12 lakh. Many of these individuals currently send about Rs 50,000 monthly to their families in Manipur.

The new training centre is expected to alleviate financial constraints on aspiring candidates. Previously, students traveled to cities like Gurgaon and Noida for Japanese language and cultural training, incurring costs of nearly Rs 3 lakh for an eight to nine-month program. With the availability of on-campus training, candidates can reduce this expenditure by almost half while maintaining high-quality training standards.

The curriculum will include eight to nine months of intensive training in Japanese, aiming for proficiency at JLPT N5 and N4 levels, with a focus on achieving N4, or preferably N3. It will also incorporate sector-specific skills and workplace orientation, preparing candidates for assessments under Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program.

The centre plans to initially train up to 250 candidates in its first year, with intentions to expand in subsequent years. The training fees are set at Rs 1.10 lakh, with financial support available through skill loans and installment plans to enhance accessibility. Officials announced that the centre will launch its first batch in January 2026, with Japanese companies scheduled to visit Imphal in February 2026 for recruitment, marking a pivotal step in connecting Manipur’s youth to global job markets.
