Farmers in the Narikudi region staged a protest on Friday, expressing frustration over the prolonged delay in receiving compensation for paddy crops severely affected by insufficient rainfall in the 2024-25 season.
Scores of farmers, representing several villages around Narikudi, gathered to voice their concerns as they awaited financial support under the Crop Insurance Scheme. The demonstration was led by M. Arjunan, general secretary of the Cauvery Vaigai Kiruthumal Gundar Irrigation Farmers’ Federation, along with district leaders R. Ramapandian and A. Gopalakrishnan.
The farmers highlighted that 68 villages had experienced significant crop loss due to the lack of rain, impacting numerous acres of farmland. “Despite the officials conducting the enumeration and assessing the extent of our losses, the compensation that was promised has yet to materialize,” lamented Ramapandian. He noted that previous protests had garnered attention but did not result in the sanctioning of the much-needed funds, citing issues in the reports submitted to authorities.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture were present to address the farmers’ grievances, promising that a renewed proposal for compensation would be forwarded to the State Government. Ramapandian emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We have faith that this fresh report will expedite the disbursal of compensation.” The officials assured the farmers that they would escalate the matter to the Virudhunagar Collector to ensure prompt action.
This latest protest underscores the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in the region as they grapple with the impacts of climate change and bureaucratic delays in disaster response. The situation remains critical, with many farmers reliant on timely compensation to recover from their losses and plan for future planting seasons.
