Sanae Takaichi Makes History as Japan’s First Female Prime Minister
Sanae Takaichi has made history by becoming Japan’s first female prime minister after a landmark vote on Tuesday, October 21. The 64-year-old conservative politician, often dubbed Japan’s “Iron Lady,” has expressed admiration for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
This marks Takaichi’s third attempt to steer Japan, as she becomes the fourth prime minister in five years from the scandal-ridden Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). A protégé of the late Shinzo Abe, she aligns with the party’s hardline faction. Former US President Donald Trump has described her as “a highly respected person of great wisdom.”
Takaichi assumes office during a period marked by significant economic and political obstacles. Japan is currently grappling with a historic surge in inflation and an escalating cost of living crisis. She has vowed to alleviate economic pressures through tax cuts and increased government spending. Nevertheless, concerns remain among investors about Japan’s high public debt, which is one of the largest among developed nations.
The challenges do not stop there, as Japan also faces a declining population and sluggish economic growth, both of which present substantial hurdles for her administration. Despite these issues, her promises for economic revitalization have infused confidence in investors, propelling Japanese stock markets to record highs following her election.
Foreign policy presents another critical challenge for Takaichi. Japan’s alliance with the United States is under strain, influenced by shifting US foreign priorities. A recently negotiated trade agreement between Washington and Tokyo awaits implementation, while Trump has urged Japan to halt oil imports from Russia and increase its defense spending.
Moreover, Takaichi will need to address China’s growing influence in the region. Analysts suggest that her leadership will be defined by her ability to effectively balance Japan’s economic recovery with its diplomatic and security commitments.
