Terrifying Triumph: ‘Black Phone 2’ Shatters Records with a $42 Million Global Opening!

Box Office Buzz: “Black Phone 2” Haunts the Charts

In a weekend that saw thrills and chills, the horror sequel “Black Phone 2” slashed its way to the top of the North American box office with a tantalizing $26.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Not only did it outshine the original’s haunting debut of $23.6 million, but it also offers a much-needed boon for Blumhouse Productions after facing a series of flops this year, including the not-so-spooky “M3GAN 2.0.”

Although “Black Phone 2” opened right on the mark with what box office analysts expected, October’s moviegoing has been a tad sluggish, dipping around 11% from last year. However, don’t shed any tears just yet-the overall box office is still up about 4% compared to last year. Yet, the industry is eagerly awaiting a blockbuster that might reignite the momentum, possibly arriving late November or December.

Released across 3,411 theaters, Universal Pictures ensured the film had a splashy entry, bolstered by glowing reviews. This sequel, arriving four years after its predecessor, reunites director Scott Derrickson, alongside the chilling presence of Ethan Hawke and the talented Mason Thames. Exit polls revealed that 63% of opening weekend audiences were between the ages of 18 and 34, with Hispanics making up a striking 39% of ticket buyers-who knew horror could be so inclusive?

Unlocking its international potential, “Black Phone 2” also amassed an additional $15.5 million from 71 territories, bringing its global opening to a spine-tingling $42 million against a production budget of $30 million. Jim Orr, head of Universal’s domestic distribution, rejoiced at the opening, praising Derrickson and Blumhouse for crafting an “unbelievably haunting” narrative that audiences couldn’t resist.

The original “Black Phone,” released back in the cinema revival era of 2021, grossed over $161 million against a modest budget of $18 million, proving the franchise has staying power. Yet, Blumhouse has had its share of misfires recently, with underwhelming titles like “Wolf Man” and “The Woman in the Yard.” However, hope is alive with a sequel to “Five Nights at Freddy’s” on the horizon, a title that previously banked nearly $300 million.

This year, the horror genre has been thriving with blockbusters like “Weapons” and the multi-genre “Sinners,” exceeding a whopping $1.2 billion for the industry. Thus, while “Black Phone 2” dominated this weekend’s charts, it was the sole standout amidst a plethora of other wide releases, signaling that the October box office, while not sizzling with blockbusters, still holds promise for those willing to brave the dark.

Next week brings a fresh wave of award contenders, including the intriguing “Bugonia,” a collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, as well as the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” starring Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear.” So grab your popcorn and settle in-October is just heating up!
