Unveiling the Hidden Dangers: Low Public Awareness Leaves Green Firecrackers in a Dangerous Grey Zone!
Are your firecrackers genuinely ‘green’? As the festival season approaches, concerns are rising regarding the authenticity of eco-friendly fireworks. Interviews with nearly a dozen residents conducted by The Hindu have revealed a worrying lack of awareness about green firecrackers and how to distinguish them from conventional alternatives.
First developed by CSIR-NEERI in 2018, green firecrackers aim to minimize air and noise pollution. These eco-friendly options generate less particulate matter and are free from harmful chemicals like barium, while also being approximately 30% quieter than traditional firecrackers. Authentic green firecrackers can be recognized by a CSIR-NEERI and PESO logo, along with a QR code for verification. However, many consumers, like R. Mohan from Medavakkam, report that the firecrackers they purchased lacked this identifying logo. Furthermore, shopkeepers often fail to promote these environmentally friendly options, exacerbating the confusion.
In Tamil Nadu, despite government initiatives encouraging the use of green firecrackers, enforcement of regulations remains weak. D. Aravinth from Valasaravakkam noted that while he noticed the logo on the firecrackers he bought, he felt uninformed about its implications. “I have never come across any information about it, even on social media,” he stated.
Experts highlight the ongoing health risks associated with all types of firecrackers, including green ones. Parth Sharma, a public health researcher based in New Delhi, cautioned that even these supposedly safer alternatives can increase the presence of ultrafine particles. These tiny particles pose severe health risks, as they can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, leading to various health ailments. Sharma compared the promotional tactics used for green firecrackers to those of other industries, such as tobacco, which introduced “healthier” products despite existing dangers.
Although green firecrackers eliminate certain heavy metals that are potentially carcinogenic, Sharma emphasizes that the key issue in India lies in quality control and regulatory enforcement. He questioned the integrity of the market: “When even medicines are adulterated, what’s to stop so-called green firecrackers from being produced just like regular ones — with the same harmful metals?” Dr. Sharma pointed out that chronic exposure to particulate matter could lead to serious health problems, including anemia, infertility, and tuberculosis.
Residents also express frustration over the challenges of identifying genuine green firecrackers. Vasanthi, another local, remarked, “There’s no proper awareness campaign or a drive to educate people.” This lack of information further complicates the landscape as consumers seek safer alternatives during festive celebrations.
With considerable confusion surrounding the authenticity of green firecrackers, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and for authorities to implement effective awareness campaigns. As this festival season approaches, both safety and clarity are paramount in making eco-friendly choices.
By raising awareness and ensuring strict regulatory enforcement, stakeholders can help protect public health and the environment, enabling everyone to celebrate responsibly.
