Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently hailed the Indian government’s newly launched Demography Mission as a significant measure aimed at safeguarding the nation’s identity, security, and cultural heritage. Speaking on Saturday, Sarma emphasized that Assam has been profoundly affected by illegal immigration, asserting that Muslims now make up over 38 percent of the state’s population.

Sarma pointed out that the establishment of a high-powered committee under this Demography Mission represents a vital step toward scientifically analyzing demographic changes and addressing them through what he termed the “3-D policy – Detect, Delete, and Deport.” He described this initiative as a historical necessity.

In a post on social media platform X, Sarma underscored the urgency of this initiative, stating, “A decisive move to protect identity, security, and cultural heritage,” while presenting data illustrating demographic trends in Assam since 1971.

According to the figures highlighted by Sarma, the percentage of Hindus in Assam has decreased from 72.51 percent in 1971 to 61.46 percent in 2011. In contrast, the Muslim population has risen from 24.56 percent to 34.22 percent in the same time frame.

The Demography Mission was first unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech. The mission’s goal is to study population dynamics and their implications for national identity and resource management.
