Tripura’s Bold Step Towards Food Self-Sufficiency Through Urban Farming
Tripura is making significant strides toward achieving self-sufficiency in food grain production, with districts such as Dhalai and Khowai poised to reach this goal soon, according to Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath. Speaking on October 11, he highlighted the state government’s intensified efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and promote urban farming.
Minister Nath’s announcement came during a state-level event at the State Agriculture Research Station in AD Nagar, where three major agricultural initiatives were launched: the PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana, the National Mission on Pulses, and the National Mission on Natural Farming. These schemes, recently introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, aim to bolster food grain production and sustainable farming practices throughout the state.
“The PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana targets 100 districts nationwide with low food grain output, including North Tripura. Our objective is to expand cultivation areas, improve food grain production, and enhance agricultural capacity in places like Khowai and Dhalai,” stated Nath. He noted that while districts such as South Tripura, Sepahijala, and Gomati have already achieved self-sufficiency, others are gradually closing the gap.
Tripura has made remarkable progress in rice cultivation, securing the sixth position in the country with an average yield of 3,299 kg per hectare, well above the national average of 2,882 kg per hectare. In terms of pulse production, the state records an output of 856 kg per hectare, slightly shy of the national average of 881 kg per hectare. Sepahijala leads the state in agricultural credit distribution, followed by South and West Tripura, with North Tripura trailing.
The minister emphasized the need for a renewed focus on pulse cultivation, organic farming, and reducing reliance on imports. “We previously depended on imports for potatoes, but we expect Tripura to become self-sufficient in potato and onion production within three years. Our hardworking and resilient farmers, coupled with favorable rainfall, will help Dhalai and Khowai attain self-sufficiency in food grains,” Nath remarked.
The government is actively encouraging farmers to adopt organic and sustainable practices to ensure consistent production growth, despite limited cultivable land. Additionally, the state plans to leverage its abundant rainfall to address challenges like insect infestations.
