Transforming Lives: Major Pipeline Expansion from Chembarambakkam Plant Boosts Chennai’s Water Supply!
Chennai is set to experience a significant enhancement in its water supply, thanks to recent infrastructure upgrades at the Chembarambakkam water treatment plant. In a key development aimed at addressing the city’s increasing water demands, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a ₹66.78-crore project designed to maximize the plant’s output to its full capacity of 530 million liters per day (mld).
Currently, Chennai draws approximately 1,180 mld from various sources, and the improvement will add an extra 265 mld to the city’s water distribution network. This upgrade will directly benefit around two million residents in areas such as Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar, Valasaravakkam, and Alandur, while also extending support to neighboring local bodies, including Mangadu, Kundrathur, Thirumazhisai, and Sriperumbudur. Additionally, the Tambaram and Avadi municipal corporations will see enhanced water services as part of this initiative.
The revitalization project included the installation of an 11.7-km pipeline from Chembarambakkam to Porur, along with a 9.2-km pipeline extending from the Poonamallee Bypass Road junction to Koyambedu. Overcoming various challenges, the work required meticulous planning, including laying the pipeline six feet underground. The Chembarambakkam plant, originally launched in 2007 with a single pipeline capacity of 265 mld, now boasts double that capacity after this extensive upgrade.
Alongside the infrastructure improvements, the Chief Minister also unveiled the ‘Chennai Kudineer’ mobile application, a tool designed to streamline resident engagement with Metrowater services. Users can now easily register complaints, attach photographs, and receive notifications about their complaint status through the app, which is available in both English and Tamil. The mobile app complements other existing communication platforms, such as the Metrowater website, social media, email, and dedicated helplines. Residents also have the option to raise complaints via WhatsApp at 8144930308.
The event was also attended by local leaders, including Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru and Minister for Minorities Welfare S.M. Nasar, showcasing a collaborative effort to enhance Chennai’s water infrastructure.
As Chennai continues to grow, such initiatives highlight the commitment of local authorities to ensure sustainable water supply for its residents. Upgrading the Chembarambakkam plant not only addresses immediate water needs but also lays the groundwork for future urban demands. With enhanced access to crucial water resources and modernized complaint resolution, Chennai is moving towards a more efficient and responsive water management system.
This development marks an important stride in ensuring the well-being of Chennai’s populace and serves as a model for future infrastructure projects aimed at improving urban service delivery.
