Kruthiga, the founder of The Inkpot Circle, hosts monthly meetings at Odyssey Bookstore, attracting 20 members eager to explore themes ranging from Valentine’s to South Asian heritage. She attributes the current popularity of reading to the rise of bookstagramming on social media, which has shifted perceptions, making reading more socially acceptable. “What makes it special is how it unites people with diverse literary tastes,” she notes, emphasizing the community aspect that transcends genres.
In Anna Nagar, Krishna Kumar curates Tower Reads, where students gather on Saturday mornings to read fiction and memoirs in both Tamil and English. The group frequently enjoys surprise visits from renowned poets and authors, fostering an intimate atmosphere filled with literary discourse. “We see people of all ages, from fathers with their children to the elderly,” Kumar states, illustrating the all-inclusive vibe that these clubs promote.
Arvind, who leads Lake Reads Chitlapakkam, also relishes the sense of community that has developed by the city’s lakeside amphitheater. “It feels like a close-knit circle since many of us share similar backgrounds,” he shares, reflecting on how these gatherings not only inspire a love for reading but also reinforce social bonds.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these clubs, Solomon Manoj observes a potential downside. “While reading is fundamentally a private pursuit, there is now a pressure to read faster and keep up with the growing number of clubs,” he cautions.
