Petition Uncovers Serious Flaws in UGC Draft Math Curriculum
Over 900 researchers and educators have called on the University Grants Commission (UGC) to abandon its draft mathematics curriculum, claiming it is “riddled with grave defects” that, if implemented, could damage the futures of generations of students. The UGC released this draft undergraduate curriculum for nine subjects, including mathematics, last month, inviting public feedback.
In a petition addressed to the UGC chairman, the signees urged the formation of a new committee that includes expert mathematicians and mathematics educators to revise the curriculum thoroughly. Mahan Mj, a mathematics professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee, highlighted that the draft contains significant omissions and errors.
According to Mahan, the draft curriculum suggests spending only one semester on analysis, which he believes is insufficient given its foundational importance in mathematics education. He argued for at least three to four distinct courses on analysis. Additionally, he noted that the coverage of algebra is lacking, asserting that at least three algebra courses should be included in the undergraduate curriculum.
Mahan expressed concerns over the drastic changes proposed, emphasizing that the academic community has typically experienced only incremental shifts in curricula, making this overhaul unprecedented. The petition highlights inadequate treatment of essential mathematical topics, underscoring a need for careful reevaluation to ensure students receive a comprehensive education.
