Manipur Crackdown: Urgent Arrest of Eight Drug Smugglers and Militants
Manipur police and security forces conducted a series of coordinated operations, resulting in the arrests of drug smugglers, insurgent cadres, and arms traffickers, alongside significant recoveries of weapons, explosives, and narcotics.
On August 31, security personnel apprehended two alleged drug smugglers, Jahiya Khan (25) and Md Zamir Khan (23), both residents of Moreh Premnagar Ward No. 4, at the Tengnoupal Naka checkpoint in Tengnoupal district. They were found in possession of 3.387 kg of WY tablets and a four-wheeler.
The same day, in the Churachandpur district, police arrested two additional suspects: Paokholal (53) from Lhanghoi Veng and Kamkholal, also known as Lalpu (43), from Joljam village. Their inquiries led to the discovery of 24 soap cases filled with brown sugar from various locations within the Singhat police station’s jurisdiction.
Additionally, Manipur Police reported detaining two active members of the banned group PREPAK (PRO). Laishram Suranjoy Singh, known as Lamkhonba or Apat (39), was arrested in Takhel Awang Leikai, while Phuritshabam Dharmaraj Singh, also referred to as Phirepa, Angangjao, or Nanao (25), was taken into custody at Khonghampat Mantri Leikai. A wallet containing Dharmaraj’s Aadhaar card was also seized.
Separately, on August 30, authorities found a large cache of arms and explosives in the Kanto Sabal area under the jurisdiction of the Sekmai police station in Imphal West. The recovery included three grenades, 53 live rounds of various calibers, two Baofeng handsets, a mobile phone, an LMG magazine, a bulletproof plate, a rifle bayonet, suspected IED components, military gear, and other items.
The crackdown further extended to the Arambai Tenggol (AT). Two alleged operatives, Laishram Tondomba Singh (27) from Wangjing Lamding Bazar in Thoubal district and Tourangbam Amarjit Meitei, known as Yaima (20) from Lamding Mamang Leikai, were arrested for their involvement in illegal arms possession and trafficking. Authorities seized a substantial amount, including seven HK33 rifles, two M4A1 carbines, two Glock .45 pistols with magazines, 36 empty magazines, 100 rounds of .45 ammunition, four mobile phones, Aadhaar cards, cash, and a four-wheeler. Both individuals were remanded into police custody for nine days.
Meanwhile, as part of their ongoing efforts against traffic violations, Manipur Police removed tinted films from two vehicles on August 30.
