Urgent Action Needed: Fast-Track Road Repairs for Durga Puja in Guwahati
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has instructed the Public Works Department (PWD), police, and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to expedite the repair of main and linking roads leading to the Durga Puja pandals. This directive is aimed at ensuring the timely completion of ongoing drainage projects as well. Both the PWD and GMC have also been tasked with restoring broken slabs over drains and footpaths while installing appropriate signage to enhance public safety, especially since many footpaths in Guwahati are constructed over drains.
Significantly, many roads in various parts of the city are in poor condition, with potholes of different sizes and depths, primarily due to the active construction of flyovers and drainage systems, causing discomfort for residents. CS Ravi Kota convened a review meeting on Saturday night with all relevant departments to evaluate the status of infrastructure work in light of the upcoming Durga Puja, set to begin on September 28, as well as several international cricket matches planned from September through February of next year.
The meeting addressed critical issues including flyovers, drainage systems, restoration of rain-damaged roads, road connectivity, street lighting, and other essential civic services. The PWD has been asked to identify crucial roads needing immediate attention and provide this information to the Guwahati police commissioner to ensure smooth traffic flow during the festivities. Kota has also mandated stringent adherence to safety regulations by contractors engaged in flyover projects.
Additionally, the Guwahati Jal Board and GMC have been instructed to swiftly resolve any leakage and pipeline-related issues. The Guwahati police commissioner is advised to create a detailed mapping of all Puja pandals across the city, enabling effective traffic regulation and security arrangements. Other agencies are expected to coordinate with the police department for any necessary traffic management due to ongoing construction work.
Kota emphasized the need for all departments and agencies to work closely together, complete repair and construction tasks within set timelines, and implement all necessary measures to ensure smooth operations during the festivities and international events.
